Bonk, C. (2009) R2D2: A model for using technology in education eSchool News, December 11

For all you Luke Skywalkers and Princess Leias in e-learning, this article provides a good summary of Curtis Bonk’s R2D2 instructional design model for web-based learning. Curtis is one of the good guys in e-learning. (Me, I’m with Darth Vader.)

Curtis J. Bonk is Professor of Instructional Systems Technology at Indiana University. He has a popular blog called TravelinEdMan

  1. It’s not as though we’ll be able to have our own Rosie from ‘The Jetsons’ anytime soon. However, robots are slowly making their way into our homes to help with simple tasks. As their abilities grow and prices drop, scientists and legal scholars have begun discussing some of the potential problems that a close, daily relationship with robots may bring about.

  2. R2D2 is a comprehensive instructional design model for online learning. R2D2 stands for Reading, Reflecting, Displaying, and Doing. The intent of using this model is that it address the perferred learning styles of the visual and audotiry learners; reflective and observational learners; visual learners, and hands-on learners.

I saw nothing in Bonks and Zhang’s book that mentioned robots!

  3. I am fairly sure that the R2D2 ID Model is a constructivist model developed by Jerry Willis. More than just allowing for preferred learning styles, it focuses on giving the learner control in the learning process from the design to the actual lesson.

I am also pretty sure the technology the author of this site was referring to was Web-based/Web-enhanced instruction… although robots might be fun.

  4. Wow, do I feel like a heel… There are two R2D2 Models. One is the Curtis Bonk and Ke Zhang Model designed for online learning (Read, Reflect, Display and Do), and the other was Jerry Willis’ constructivist model (Reflective Recursive Design and Development). I apologize for the contradiction.

    Still no robots 🙁
