Extract:

‘The Sloan Consortium’s most recent national survey, Staying The Course – Online Education in the United States, 2008, found more than 3.9 million students are now learning online, a 12 percent increase from the previous year. Nationwide, college leaders project the growth of online enrollments will continue at a higher rate than face to face education.

Celebrating this revolution, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation recently announced that its major grant program for online education “has largely achieved its goals and grown to a point where the Foundation’s support will soon no longer be necessary.” … the Sloan Consortium “… will continue to offer its services to online-education providers. The Foundation has awarded The Sloan Consortium a $4-million grant to make a transition from an informal membership group to a nonprofit organization” that will continue the work of the Foundation in advancing the field of online education.’
